7th Muzakarah Cendekiawan Syariah Nusantara (MCSN 2013)

Singapore, May 29-30 2013 – Muzakarah Cendekiawan Shari’ah Nusantara (The Regional Shari’ah Scholars Dialogue) is an annual event that gathers prominent Shari’ah scholars from the ASEAN region, comprising Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, Singapore and Thailand. The theme of this year Muzakarah is Ujrah: Issues and Applications in Islamic Finance.

This year MCSN was held in Singapore Fairmont Hotel and attracted more than 180 participants from all over the region ranging from scholars, academician, practitioners in Islamic financial institutions, representatives of the Central Bank of Malaysia, Dewan Shariah Nasional of Majelis Ulama’ Indonesia, Singapore Islamic Scholars & Religious Teachers Association (PERGAS) and Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS) as well as students. Yang Berhormat Dr. Yaacob Ibrahim, Minister for Communications and Information and Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs officiated the events.

The first day of the event witnessed the presentation of papers by Dr. Zakariya Hama (Yala University, Thailand) Dr. Shamsiah Abdul Karim (MUIS Singapore) Us. Saiful Anuar Hambali, (Affin Islamic Bank, Malaysia) Ust.Ali Jinnah Muhammad (ISRA,Malaysia) and Prof. Dr. Mohammad Amin Suma (UIN Syarif Hidayatullah, Indonesia). Another four papers were presented on the following day by Dr. Abdul Nasir Abdul Rani (UNISSA, Brunei) Ust. Nazri Chik, (Bank Islam Malaysia Berhad, Malaysia) , Dr. Azman Mohd Nor (International Islamic University Malaysia) and Ust. Abdul Hakim Osman (AmFamily Takaful Berhad, Malaysia).

Among the invited panellists as discussants were Dato’ Seri Setia Awang Hj Metussin Hj Baki (Shariah High Court, Brunei), Prof. Dr. H. Fathurraman Djamil (DSN, Indonesia), Prof.Dr. Engku Rabiah Engku Ali (IIUM Malaysia), Prof. Dr. Mohammad Rusydi (ACIFS Australia), Assoc Prof Asmadi Mohd Naim (UUM, Malaysia), Ustaz Azizi Che Seman (UM, Malaysia) Dr. Maroning Salaming (Prince Songkla University,Thailand) Dr. Fadzliwati Mohiddin (UNISSA, Brunei) and Dr. Tatik Mariyanti (Trisakti University,Indonesia).

After two days debate, the MCSN ended with 9 resolutions, in which it resolved that the imposition of fees and charges Islamic financial products must adhere the rulings of the Shari’ah. The resolution also proposed further research to be conducted on a few areas, which are of crucial significant to the industry.
